Title sequence analysis- Dexter

Although Dexter is not a film but a television series I felt that the title sequence for it was very linkable to the genre we are putting our film in and it is very cleverly done.
Dexter is a tv show about a man (dexter) who is a bloodstain pattern analyst for the Miami Metro Police Department yet moonlights as a serial killer. This is where in title sequence becomes very clever. The sequence itself shows him getting ready in the morning with the usual routine of shaving, cooking breakfast, cleaning his teeth and getting dressed, but the way the sequence has been shot and edited together leads you to believe that you are watching his serial killer side until it is revealed it is just a normal routine which shows the two sides of him that the show is about.
The shots are all either medium close-ups or extreme close-ups with the ECU being used to lead you to believe you are watching his serial killer side and then the MCU being used to reveal the normality of the routine.

The editing in the title sequence is very important as it shows the difference between the close-ups as well as keeping interest with its strange technique. There is a mix of speeds of the footage that has been used during the sequence for example a very good shot of this is where the camera is at a birds eye view shot of a coffee grinder which shows coffee beans being crushed. This shot itself shows a passage of time where at the beginning the coffee beans are almost still intact and then it jumps with the exact same shot yet the beans are completely in pieces. It then cuts to a medium close-up ninety degree angle on which you assume is Dexter's hand holding the top of the presser, this is at normal speed but as he re-adjusts his hand on the handle the footage is sped up giving a very good effect on the whole shot, this is done throughout the title sequence.
